There are some stories in the history of Raj Comics (Raj Comics) which are called ‘cult classics’. One of them is ‘Nagraj and Shango’ (Nagraj aur Shango). The comics dates back to the period when Nagraj (Nagraj) was on a world tour and facing international criminals. This work by writer Parshuram Sharma and painter Sanjay Ashtaputra gave readers everything a comics lover expects—brilliant martial arts, suspense, conflict started with misunderstanding and then an alliance formed for a bigger cause.

This comics is the direct next part of the previous part, ‘Nagraj’s Visit to Hong Kong’, where after Hong Kong the story revolves around the freedom of ‘Silver Land’.

The departure point of the story: A Dangerous Misunderstanding

The story begins with a tense atmosphere. Master Suzuki has died in the previous part, and while dying he gave a ring to his beloved disciple Shango (Shango). Shango misunderstands that the murderer of his guru is Nagraj. In the fire of revenge, he reaches Hut No. 5 located at ‘Green Beach’ in Hong Kong in search of Nagraj.

Here a tremendous fight (Epic Fight) is seen between Nagraj and Shango. Shango is no ordinary warrior; he is a ‘Korean fighter’ and a master of Kung Fu. When Nagraj uses his ‘poisonous hiss’, it has no effect on Shango. Nagraj understands that Shango is a master who has prepared his body for every kind of attack.

Nagraj vs. Shango: The Duel of Power and Wisdom

The early part of the comics is completely full of action. Shango’s strength is such that he cuts doors with his fingers and gives Nagraj a tough fight. Nagraj, known for his snake power and martial arts, was fighting a human being who was not affected by his poison for the first time.

In the end, Nagraj uses his snakes only to entangle Shango so that he can get out of there. Nagraj’s saying, “I will meet you again, Shango!” creates excitement among the readers. He had understood that Shango was not a bad person, but a victim of a misunderstanding.

Jambalu’s Entry and Roll of the Dice

The story takes a new turn when a dangerous villain named Jambalu (Jambalu) attacks Shango. Jambalu is loyal to Chango (Chango) and has the strength to chew through iron bars. When Shango falls into Jambalu’s trap and is taken hostage, Nagraj reaches there as the messiah.

Nagraj not only saves Shango’s life but also drives a demon like Jambalu mad with his poisonous snakes. This is the moment when Shango understands that Nagraj is not his enemy but his protector. Nagraj tells Shango the full truth of Master Suzuki’s death and also clears the secret of the rings. This character arc is very beautifully written.

Revolution of Silver Land: The Conch of Freedom

After the alliance is formed, Nagraj and Shango’s main goal becomes to liberate Silver Land (Silver Land) from the clutches of dictator Chango and Commander Saboto. Chango had enslaved the people of Silver Land and was cultivating opium there.

Here Nagraj does not just look like a superhero, but comes out as a strategist. He brings Princess Takashi to the public so that the spark of rebellion can ignite. Shango, who himself had lived among the laborers, leads his people. This part gives the comics a ‘political thriller’ look.

Chango’s Fear and ‘Snake Proof’ Strategy

Comics villain Chango is also not a weak player. He has come to know that Nagraj is the lord of thousands of snakes. So he gets a special ‘rebellion dress’ (Anti-Snake Suit) prepared for his soldiers, which is not affected by snake bites. It is interesting to see how a villain tries to find a scientific break in the power of superheroes.

The headquarters of Chango is the ‘Jalmahal’ built on a sea lake, which was considered impenetrable for security. But every security system of Chango weakens in front of Nagraj’s hypnotic power and art of disguise.

Climax: Storming the Water Palace and the End of the Sabotos

The climax of the story comes when Nagraj and Shango attack from different fronts. Shango enters the palace via the tunnel, while Nagraj reaches from the sky (via helicopter) to capture Chango.

The war taking place inside the palace is shown in a very grand manner. The sound of bullets, fireballs, and pictures of Nagraj’s war—Sanjay Ashtaputra has brought this war alive. In the end, Chango is taken prisoner, and Commander Saboto cannot accept his defeat and commits suicide by jumping from the roof of the palace. It becomes a strong symbol of the end of evil.

Review: Portraiture and the Art Side

Sanjay Ashtaputra’s art is the biggest plus point of this comics. Shango’s design—his face and special hat—gives him a distinct identity, and the fine depiction of his muscles clearly shows his tremendous strength. Nagraj’s agility has also been shown very well, where complete justice has been done to his ‘snake-like nature’ by showing him crawling on the walls and swimming in water.

Apart from this, the action panels of blasts and fights are so dynamic that, while reading, they feel like lively scenes of a film.

Dialogues and Screenplay

Parshuram Sharma’s dialogues are direct and effective. Shango’s anger and Nagraj’s restraint are clearly visible in his words. Especially the scene where Nagraj explains to Shango is very emotionally impressive.

The pace of the story is very fast. Showing a big revolution in a successful way in just 32 pages shows the skill of the author.

Why Are These Comics Still Important?

This comics team-up magic shows in a spectacular way how heroes with two different cultures and powers can come together to make the impossible possible. Such stories have played a major role in increasing the craze for kung fu and karate in India, which helped in popularizing martial arts.

Along with this, the story of the independence of Silver Land strengthens the voice of the people against dictators and gives the message of the victory of democracy. This vintage appeal and its special taste of eighties comics is really difficult to find in today’s digital comics.

Conclusion: A Timeless Farewell

At the end of the comics, Princess Takashi takes over the power of Silver Land, and Shango becomes her commander and protector. Nagraj, never intended for power or fame, sets off on his next journey with a small boat.

‘Nagraj Aur Shango’ is a story that reminds us that bravery lies not only in fighting, but also in recognizing the truth and standing together for justice. This comics raj is such a diamond of the golden age of comics that every comics lover must read at least once.
