Grave of Nagraj Review: Origin Story, Romo Friendship, Powers & Cliffhanger Explained
Grave of Nagraj — The comic where Nagraj rises from villain to hero and gets buried under rubble in one of Raj Comics' most iconic cliffhangers.

Grave of Nagraj is an important link in the Nagraj series published by Raj Comics. Its author is Parshuram Sharma, who wrote many stories from the early period of Nagraj. Its artist is Sanjay Ashtaputra, and the editor is Manish Chandra Gupta. This story is from the time when Nagraj was leaving his negative image (villain) and moving on the path of becoming a hero. Nagraj’s past, his powers, and his resolve are shown in a very effective manner in this comic.

Story of Nagraj’s Grave: Did Our Favorite Hero Really Die? (Plot Analysis)

The story begins with the introduction of Nagraj. Readers are told that notorious scientist Professor Nagmani had groomed Nagraj as a terrorist, hired by an international criminal named ‘Bulldog’. But Mahatma Gorakhnath operated on Nagraj’s mind and freed him from Nagmani’s control. Now Nagraj has sworn that he will eliminate terrorism from the world.

Nagraj moves towards the ‘Saku clan’, a Bulldog hideout in the forests of Assam. Here he meets ‘Romo’, who previously worked for the Bulldogs but is now addicted to alcohol. Romo betrays Nagraj and traps him in a ‘Shreefangar’ (a secret cave) so that he can get a reward from ‘Shoru’ (a regional boss of the Bulldog).

However, Nagraj defeats Romo with the help of his martial arts (Snake Hand Style) and amazing powers. Romo becomes Nagraj’s friend and companion, impressed by his strength and his righteous thinking. The story then takes many twists and turns. Nagraj and Romo together destroy Shoru’s hideouts. Finally, Bulldog nervously contacts Professor Nagmani, where he learns that Nagraj is now out of their control. Bulldog decides to bomb his headquarters so that Nagraj will die buried under the debris. The comic ends on a tremendous ‘cliffhanger’, where Nagraj and Romo are buried under the rubble.

Main Characters: Romo and Nagraj’s Unique Friendship (Character Breakdown)

In this comic, the initial form of Nagraj is seen, which is slightly different from today’s ‘Modern Nagraj’, because snake-like carvings (scales) are clearly visible on his body, and he is also seen in white shirt attire. The change in his thinking is clearly visible here, where he not only punishes criminals but also tries to show the right path to a lost person like Romo.

Romo’s character is the life of this story. He is a powerful man but has lost his strength and identity due to alcohol addiction. Nagraj shows him the path to self-respect and truth, making his journey from a villain’s companion to Nagraj’s loyal friend very inspiring. Meanwhile, Bulldog and Shoru emerge as effective comic villains of the 80s and 90s. Bulldog’s huge body, cigar, and cruelty make him scary, while Shoru’s cunning keeps the suspense in the story until the end.

Illustration by Sanjay Ashtaputra: Visual Masterpiece of the 90s

The illustration by Sanjay Ashtaputra is very detailed and impressive for that period. The kind of panels used to showcase Nagraj’s martial arts moves keeps readers connected to the story. Especially the use of dark colors in the snake scenes of Nagraj and the scenes inside ‘Shrimp Gar’ shows the serious atmosphere of the story. The use of words like ‘Thak’, ‘Tadak’, and ‘Dhoom’ in the action scenes of the comic is reminiscent of the classic style of that period.

Parshuram Sharma’s writing is simple but impressive. Bravery and morality are clearly visible in the dialogues. For example, when Nagraj says to Romo, “I forgive your insolence… You could have taken my life if you wanted, but you didn’t.” This dialogue shows the great personality of Nagraj. The pace of the story is fast, and nowhere does the story seem heavy or slow. A new adventure awaits the reader on every page.

Powers and Martial Arts of Nagraj: The Magic of ‘Monkey Blow’ and ‘Snake Hand’

The main theme of Grave of Nagraj is ‘Reformation’. Nagraj himself was a machine-made terrorist who has now become a hero. Romo was formerly a criminal’s accomplice and an alcoholic, but now he is fighting for the truth. This story gives the message that any human being can leave his past behind and make a new and better beginning. Nagraj showing kindness even towards his enemies makes him different from other superheroes.

Fear of the Villain Bulldog and the Tricks of Professor Nagmani

The title of the comic Grave of Nagraj arouses curiosity in the minds of readers. Throughout the story, readers remain curious to know whether Nagraj will really die. In the last few pages, Bulldog’s fear and his suicidal decision (blowing up the headquarters) bring the story to a climax. The picture of Nagraj and Romo buried under the debris and the question written below—”Will Nagraj be able to come out of this grave?”—forces readers to buy the next comic, “Rebel of Nagraj”. It was a great way to tell a story and market it.

Critical Analysis: Could Something Better Happen?

Although it is a classic comic, from today’s perspective, some things may feel a bit irritating. Shoru and Bulldog, for example, have plenty of technology but give up too quickly to Nagraj’s powers. In addition, Romo’s change of heart has been shown very rapidly, which may seem a bit unrealistic. But these small shortcomings can be ignored given the style of comics of that period.

The Journey from ‘ Grave of Nagraj ‘ to ‘Nagraj’s Revenge’

This comic proves to be a milestone in the history of Raj Comics. It strengthened Nagraj’s ‘anti-terrorism’ image. The stories of this period laid the foundation of an organized ‘comics universe’ in India. The concept of millions of microscopic snakes present in Nagraj’s body also started expanding around this time.

Conclusion: Should You Read “Grave of Nagraj”?

Overall, “Nagraj Ki Grave” is a fantastic action-adventure comic. It is not just a superhero battle story, but also symbolizes friendship, loyalty, and the victory of good over evil. If you are a fan of Indian comics and want to understand the early stages of Nagraj, then this comic is definitely worth reading.
