While Raj Comics was famous for its superheroes, Manoj Comics had created a distinct identity with its magical and science-based stories. In this series, ‘Ajgar Aur Nachti Maut’ is such a memorable composition which, even today, fills the minds of readers with nostalgia. This comic is not just the story of an ordinary hero and villain, but also offers a brilliant glimpse of the science fiction and human courage of that time. This work, written by Papinder Juneja and illustrated by Vijay Kadam and Atmaram Pund, takes us to a world where a ‘mutant’-like hero even risks his life to protect the country. Today, when we see this comic again, not only are the memories of that period refreshed, but we also feel the depth of the storytelling.

A diabolical mind hidden behind a white coat and the madness of Professor Yangli

The real strength of any big story is its villain, and in ‘Dancing Death’, Professor Yangli emerges as such a dangerous villain. He is not a common criminal, but an eccentric scientist who wants to rule the entire world. In his laboratory on an anonymous island far away from India, he prepares a dangerous weapon, which he names ‘Dancing Death’.

This weapon is actually a huge flying saucer, which has saw-like sharp-edged blades on its sides. This saucer cuts large buildings like butter while dancing in the air. This invention of Yangli is a scary example of the misuse of science. His character is so impressive that the reader can clearly feel the cruelty hidden in his laughter and the greed for power visible in his eyes. He places a skull mark on his flag, which shows his destructive thinking. Yangli’s claim that his ‘Dancing Death’ will make India kneel creates tension throughout the story that makes the reader constantly turn the pages.

The orgy of death and the scene of devastation dancing over the country’s capital

The very beginning of the story is dramatic and fear-inducing. The twenty-seventh floor of Delhi’s ‘Five Star Hotel Surya’ suddenly becomes the victim of that flying saucer roaming in the air. Vijay Kadam and Atmaram Pund have shown these scenes of devastation so vividly that the sound of the falling building and the screams of the people seem to come out of the paper. The loss of innocent lives and the collapse of tall buildings like cards was an experience for readers of that time that both frightened them and emotionally connected them to the story.

This attack by Yangli was not just a loss of buildings, but an attack on the honor of the country. When even the powerful cannons and fighter planes of the Indian Army start appearing helpless in front of that saucer, such despair spreads in the atmosphere that only a great hero could eliminate it. Here, the author has very wisely created such a situation for the entry of the hero where the entire system has failed.

The rise of the mighty Ajgar and the mystery of his astonishing powers

When technology and the army are defeated, then ‘Ajgar’ enters the story. Ajgar, whose real name is ‘Tripund’, is one of the most different and interesting characters of Manoj Comics. He has the unique power to transform his body into a giant python. He is a hero who uses not only his physical strength but also the ancient knowledge and mantras received from his Guru Jayadrona.

Along with Ajgar, his companion ‘Mahabali Shera’ is also present, who is known for his tremendous strength. The pair of these two shows the conflict between modern science, i.e., Yangli on one side, and nature and ancient power, i.e., Ajgar, on the other side. Ajgar has a calm but extremely strong personality. When he jumps from the building using his ‘Ajgari Bandhan’ power, the reader becomes completely immersed in the story. His ability to change form makes him different from other superheroes. He is not just a warrior but also a protector of Indian culture and ancient knowledge, who stands like a rock in front of foreign danger.

Creepy hunting of iron lions and mechanical birds

Professor Yangli is not limited to just ‘Dancing Death’; he keeps an entire army made of machines ready to welcome his enemies. When Ajgar and Shera move towards Yangli’s secret island, they encounter an ‘iron lion’ whose claws and jaws can tear apart any living creature in a moment. This robotic lion runs on Yangli’s remote control, and its strength is extremely dangerous. This is followed by an attack by a fearsome ‘mechanical bird’ whose bright rays emanating from its eyes wreak havoc.

The author has created such a thrilling situation for the readers where the hero not only has to fight but also understand the weaknesses of these machines. During these battles, Ajgar shows his wisdom, and Shera breaks the iron machines with his strength, making the action of the comic even more exciting. These scenes show that on one side there are lifeless machines, and on the other side there is human courage full of emotions.

The impact of aquatic life in the depths of the sea and death

The story’s adventure is further enhanced when the protagonists try to reach Yangli’s hideout by sea. Here, they encounter a giant and dangerous aquatic creature (sea monster). This creature is actually another mechanical demon created by Yangli, whose fangs can penetrate even Ajgar’s body.

Ajgar getting trapped in the jaws of that monster under the sea, and Shera diving into the depths of the water without caring for his life, is one of the most spectacular scenes in this comic. When Shera’s sharp eyes fall on the shining eyes of that mechanical creature, he understands that its true power lies there. With all their might, when they eliminate that monster, the explosion in the water gives the reader a tremendous cinematic experience. This battle proves that Ajgar and Shera are invincible not only on land, but also in air and water.

A maze of glass bullets and the final battle of justice on the island

Eventually, the heroes reach Yangli’s island, but Yangli’s mind is still creating new troubles for them. Yangli’s bedroom is no less than a trap. He spreads countless glass bullets like marbles throughout the room, causing even a mighty warrior like Mahabali Shera to lose balance and crash into the walls.

Yangli’s laughter and Shera’s distress create a mental war-like atmosphere here. Here, Ajgar’s wisdom and use of his weapons take him out of that difficulty. Yangli thinks he has defeated the heroes, but forgets that evil always has an end. The heroes’ destruction of Yangli’s laboratory and the punishment of the evil scientist for what he has done show the victory of justice. When Yangli’s pride is broken, that scene gives satisfaction and happiness to the readers.

The hypnotic magic of Vijay Kadam and Atmaram Pund’s brush

The review will remain incomplete if its illustrations are not discussed. Vijay Kadam and Atmaram Pund have done a great job in this comic. Artwork of the 90s had its own identity. The characters’ body language, facial expressions, and especially the design of mechanical machines are extremely impressive. The design of the ‘Dancing Death’ saucer seems quite futuristic for that time.

The use of colors, especially red and yellow in devastation scenes, further increases the tension. The madness seen in Yangli’s eyes and the seriousness of Ajgar’s face are clearly visible through the lines. Every panel of the comic is drawn in such a way that the reader feels as if he has become a part of the entire event. This artwork makes this comic a real visual masterpiece.

The ramparts of the Red Fort and the unwavering spirit of patriotism

The ending of the comic is very spectacular and full of patriotism. In the end, Yangli has to bow before the justice system of the same country which he tried to insult. His hanging upside down in front of the Red Fort and the end of his crimes strengthened the feeling of patriotism in the minds of the teenage readers of that time.

The special thing about Manoj Comics was that Indian values and pride were always given importance in its stories. The anger of the people after seeing Yangli’s downfall and Mahabali Shera’s message that “this will be the fate of anyone who casts an evil eye on my holy country” gives a strong ending to the story. This ending not only leads to the defeat of a villain, but also teaches that no matter how powerful evil is, it has to be defeated in the face of truth.

Conclusion: A timeless experience that every fan has the right to relive

‘Ajgar Aur Nachti Maut’ is not just a comic, but a golden memory of childhood. This story takes us to a period when heroes were selfless and adventure meant not only violence but also a flight of imagination. Professor Yangli’s dangerous science and the tremendous power of Ajgar seem as interesting today as they were years ago.

If you want to relive the memories of the 90s and read a story that is full of suspense, action, and emotion, this comic is a must for you. The adventure, ink smell, and high-voltage drama hidden in its pages will once again take you to the world of childhood. After reading this review, you will definitely be compelled to read this comic again. This story of the fear of ‘Dancing Death’ and the bravery of Ajgar is a shining diamond of the Indian comics world.
