In the glorious history of Manoj Chitra Katha, ‘Patriot Kala Phantom(DESH BHAKT KALA PRET)’ is recorded as a story that created a different thrill among the children of the eighties and nineties. Written by Vimal Chatterjee and featuring a vibrant portrayal by Surendra Suman, the comic is not only a spy thriller but also a passionate story of a family’s struggle and sacrifice against injustice. The hero of this comic, ‘Kala Phantom(KALA PRET )’, emerged as a character for Indian readers who had Batman-like agility and Phantom-like mystery, but his soul was completely Indian and full of patriotism. This comic is the story of corruption, crime, and the struggle that started against the masked enemy ‘Black Cross’, which continues for generations.

Azad’s sacrifice and a mother’s unwavering promise

The story has very deep and emotional roots. It starts with ‘Azad’, a brave young man from fifty years ago, who was fighting alone against the corruption and criminals prevalent in the country. Azad was a hero who created fear in the hearts of criminals by adopting the form of ‘Black Ghost’, but he attained martyrdom at the hands of deceit and a dangerous organization named ‘Black Cross’.

While dying, he took a promise from his wife Radha that his son ‘Bharat’ would complete his unfinished work. Radha not only kept that promise but also made her son an expert in every art that was necessary for a hero. A mother’s pursuit of her son on the path of justice and preparing him to avenge his father’s martyrdom gives emotional strength to this story.

The new keeper of dark nights and the rise of the masked hero

When Bharat grows up, he is ready to take over his father’s legacy. Radha hands him his father’s secret garage, the old motorcycle, and the mysterious masked dress that his father once used to give criminals sleepless nights. From here, Bharat’s new journey in the form of ‘Kala Phantom’ begins. His costume may seem inspired by Batman, but his way of working and his motorcycle make him look like a modern spy. Bharat not only sets out to find his father’s murderers, but also wants to teach a lesson to those traitors of the country who are hollowing out the roots of society. For him, ‘Kala Phantom’ is not just a mask, but a responsibility that he has to fulfill at all costs.

The mystery of the Goodnight Hotel and the evening of the criminals

During his search, the dark ghost first reaches the ‘Goodnight Hotel’, which was considered a den of criminals. In the scenes here, we get to see Bharat’s physical strength and his excellent fighting ability. He interrogates the hotel manager and the goons present there about the ‘Black Cross’. When the criminals try to corner him, he dusts them off with lightning-quickness. The author has made very effective use of dialogues here, where the Kala Phantom tells the criminals that, “When the death of the jackal comes, he runs towards the city, and when the death of the bully comes, he runs towards the Kala Phantom.” This part fills the readers with excitement and makes it clear that a new fear has arisen in the world of criminals.

The secret cellar and hidden conspiracies of the Fair Board Finance Company

Taking his investigation forward, Kala Phantom enters the office of ‘Fair Board Finance Company’. Here he encounters a fat and cunning manager. This company may have seemed like a normal finance firm from the outside, but there was a huge network of illegal gambling and crime hidden within it. The dark ghost scares the manager with his wisdom and finds a way to a secret basement, which opened with a painting hidden behind a wall.

After reaching this basement, he comes to know about the gathering of big and famous criminals of the city. The scene shows the classic style of detective stories, where walls slide and secret paths open. Here too, the dark ghost shows his bravery, challenges everyone, and tries to reach the hideout of the ‘Black Cross’.

Black Cross vs. Red Lion: The Internal War of the World of Crime

An interesting aspect of the story is that it not only shows the clash between the hero and the villain, but also brings out the mutual enmity between the criminals. While on one hand ‘Black Cross’ is spreading its terror, on the other hand another criminal gang named ‘Red Lion’ is hindering its work.

The Black Cross’s main hideout and its modern machines, where it monitors its spies and operatives through TV screens, look quite advanced for the time. The Black Cross begins to fear how the Kala Phantom, killed fifteen years ago, has finally returned. This fear of the villain itself comes to the fore as the hero’s biggest victory. This confrontation between the criminals adds to the suspense and thrill in the story.

Rita’s mysterious entry and the case of diamonds worth Rs 2 crore

The story takes a new turn when the dark ghost saves a girl named ‘Rita’ from some goons on a deserted road in the silence of the night. At first glance, this seems to be a scene of a general rescue, but the depth of the story turns out to be different. Rita was actually a cunning agent working for Black Cross, who had hidden precious diamonds worth Rs 2 crore inside her clothes.

The dark ghost leaves her safely at her home. Rita is thankful to him on the surface, but is also afraid in her mind of what will happen if the dark ghost comes to know her truth. Rita’s character adds both glamour and suspense to the story and raises the question in the reader’s mind as to whether the dark phantom will understand the trap.

Surendra Suman’s unmatched artwork and visual appeal

Surendra Suman’s artwork has a huge contribution to the success of this comic. The way he has created the costumes of the dark ghost, his motorcycle, and the fight scenes is extremely impressive. Emotions of fear, anger, and cleverness are clearly visible on the faces of the characters.

The use of sound effects like ‘Dishoom’ and ‘Ahh’, especially in action scenes, was the hallmark of the comics of that era. The red mask of the Black Cross and its glowing eyes make him a dangerous villain. The choice of colors in the artwork, especially the use of blue and black in the night scenes, deepens the mysterious atmosphere of the story.

The unbreakable confluence of the fire of revenge and patriotism

The biggest specialty of ‘Patriot Kala Phantom’ is that it is not just a story of revenge. In this, love for the country is visible in Bharat’s mind at every step. He wants to punish his father’s murderers, but his real goal is to eliminate evil from society. His mother Radha continues to inspire him, giving the story a family and moral foundation.

Finally, when Bharat tells his mother about his progress, it becomes clear that the real fight has just begun. The story ends at a juncture where the reader becomes curious to read the next part ‘Kala Phantom and Black Cross’.

A classic chapter of Indian comics

In conclusion, this presentation of Manoj Chitra Katha is a great example of visual storytelling. Vimal Chatterjee has written a story that captivates the reader from beginning to end. A balanced mix of suspense, espionage, action, and emotions is seen in it.

This comic reminds us that no matter how powerful evil is, even a fearless human being can shake its empire. This issue of Kala Phantom is not only the story of the birth of a hero, but it is also a symbol of the spirit to stand against injustice.

Even today, when the pages of this old comic are turned, the same adventures and childhood memories that made us lose ourselves in the magical world of these stories for hours are brought back.
