In the 90’s, amidst Nagraj’s hiss and Dhruv’s intelligence, a superheroine emerged who wrote a new chapter of ‘Feminism’ and ‘Action’ in the Indian comics world. That—power. The comic ‘Pawanputri’, published in the year 1998, was not just a story, but it was a milestone in the ‘Shakti Year’ of Raj Comics, which made its mark in the male-dominated superhero society.
Let’s analyze this historical comic in depth and know why today, 25 years later, it is still fresh in our minds.

Historical context of ‘Shakti Varsh’: When women power took over

1998 was declared ‘Shakti Varsh’ by Raj Comics. This was a time when Indian society was gradually changing, but the world of comics was still revolving around male heroes. Writer Tarun Kumar Wahi and editor Manish Gupta took a courageous step. They introduced a heroine who was not only beautiful, but also carried the wrath of Mahakali and the heat of the sun.
‘Pawanputri’ starts with a very progressive idea: Priya Mathur becoming India’s first female commercial pilot. At that time, it was a big ‘statement’. The very opening pages of the comic give the reader a proud feeling, elevating it above a simple superhero fantasy and leading to the social message.

Patriarchal Ego vs. Progressive India: The Psychology of the Villain

The biggest strength of this comic is its villain ‘Mr. Sinhania’. He is not a demon with magical powers, but the face of the ‘toxic masculinity’ of our society that cannot see a woman in a high position. Sinhania’s dialogue, “What an example this girl of tomorrow will create,” still shows the bitter truth of many workplaces.
The author has shown how inner jealousy pushes a person towards bad paths. Sinhania shaking hands with terrorists and tampering with the plane shows that sometimes the biggest enemy is the hatred inside you. This gives the story a psychological depth.

Chanda and Shakti: The Duality and Divinity of Two Personalities

Shakti’s character Raj is one of the most complex experiments in comics. She is not a completely changed human being like Nagraj, but a divine consciousness sleeping within ‘Chanda’. The comic features Chanda as a common housewife, playing carrom with her sister-in-law. This paradox of ‘home-likeness’ (domesticity) and ‘divinity’ is interesting.
When Chanda hears Priya’s scream, her body starts trembling. The author showed that power is not just a protector, but is connected to the voice of every suffering woman in the universe. Chanda’s transformation into Shakti is not like a superhero ‘changing the costume’, but a spiritual awakening.

Dheeraj Verma’s artwork: The thrill floating in the scenes

‘Pawanputri’ is still remembered, while a big credit for it goes to veteran artist Dheeraj Verma. His artwork was quite different and detailed from other 90’s artists. He designed the power like an ‘ancient goddess’—blue color, long black hair, and lion-skin dress give it special recognition. Also, the way muscles and facial anger are carved makes it really scary and powerful.
The technical details are also amazing. The design of the ‘Pawanputri’ aircraft was quite ‘futuristic’ for that period, and the precise use of engine bursts, plumes of smoke, and sky colors gives it a cinematic experience. Dheeraj Verma’s art further shines in the action sequence when the power changes the engine while flying in the air; the feel of motion in the panels is amazing, and the close-up and wide-angle balance is great.

Impossible Fantasy: The Combination of Science and Imagination

In some parts of the comics, the author has soared the imagination, which may not seem scientifically sound, but is exciting and hair-raising for the reader. Airplane engine replacement or sudden iron ‘flyover’ on runway—these show the ‘God-like’ capabilities of visual power.
If Power is compared to DC’s ‘Wonder Woman’, Power seems much more ‘raw’ and ‘primitive’ (primal). Her powers are not born from any lab, but from a yearning for faith and justice. This is the reason why Indian readers feel more connected to her.

Synergy of screenplay, dialogue and editing

There is a rhythm in the writing of Tarun Kumar Wahi. Two tracks of the story—on one side the hijacked plane and on the other side Chanda’s house—move together and meet at the climax. The dialogues are short but effective. The fear of terrorists and the helplessness of passengers is clearly felt through words.
Editor Manish Gupta ensured that the pace of the story did not slow down anywhere. ‘Pawanputri’ is one of those few comics where something exciting is happening on every page. Thirty-two pages filled with as much spice as a whole movie.

Conclusion: Should ‘Pawanputri’ be read even today?

‘Pawanputri’ is not just a superhero action comic; it is a saga of courage. It teaches that many ‘Sinhanias’ of jealousy and hatred will come in the way of progress, but if intentions are as strong as ‘Shakti’, no disaster can stop you.
In today’s era, when we talk about women-led films (female-led movies), Raj Comics did this 26 years ago. This comic should be read by every person who wants to understand the history of Indian pop culture. This was the beginning of Shakti, which later laid the basis for great stories like ‘I Trouble’, ‘Amanush’, and ‘Zara Sambhal Ke’.
