‘Panchnag’ is a team of the most powerful and invincible guardians of Nagdweep in the universe of Raj Comics. Their birth, powers, and purpose hold a very important place in the stories of Nagraj.
Panchnag: The Story of Genesis (Origin Story)
The story of the origin of Panchnag is related to love, sadhana, sacrifice, and revenge. Their story is mainly related to Mahatma Kaldoot (Mahavishya), the great protector of Nagadweep, and Princess Surasarpa of the Takshak dynasty.
Panchatattva Sadhana and the Union of Kaaldoot
Thousands of years ago, Mahatma Kaldoot (also known as Mahavishya) was performing the arduous sadhana of ‘Panchatattva’ (earth, water, fire, air, and sky) for the protection and welfare of Nagadweep. During this time, Princess Surasarpa of the Takshak dynasty was impressed by the personality and brilliance of Mahavishya. Surasarpa proposed love and marriage to Mahavishya.
Mahavishya accepted her love, but at that time he was fully engaged in his sadhana. The arrival of Surasarpa hindered his sadhana. Mahavishya said that the result of his sadhana would now be in the form of sons born from the womb of Surasarpa. Mahavishya had promised to make Maharaj Mahavyal the Chakravarti Emperor; hence, he could not marry before his promise was fulfilled. As a result, Surasarpa gave birth to five brilliant sons without marriage, through the spiritual energy of Mahavishya and the influence of the five elements. These five children later came to be known as ‘Panchnag’.
History of the Ancients and the Background of Vengeance
There was also a sad history behind the origin of Panchnag. These five sons of Surasarpa were preceded by 100 more sons (who were the result of a conspiracy by the Tantric Vishdhar/Vishdhar Toxic). Those 100 sons were very wicked and rebellious. They had killed the then King of Nagadweep, Maniraj, and wanted to capture the throne. Mahatma Kaldoot had to kill those 100 sons to protect justice. Surasarpa drowned in this sorrow and started hating Kaaldoot. But later, when she came to know the truth and these five ‘pure’ warriors were born from the essence of the Panchatattvas, Nagadweep found its real protectors.
Members of Panchnag and Their Special Powers
The five members of Panchnag are symbols of the five elements, and each has their own distinct art of warfare and weapons.
Nagarjuna:
Introduction: He is the most skilled archer of Panchnag. His name and skill are inspired by Arjuna of the Mahabharata.
Shakti and Astra: He has a supernatural bow named ‘Gandiva’. Nagarjuna can shoot 100 arrows simultaneously. The speed of his arrows is so fast that they can even surpass the speed of the wind. He is adept at accurately aiming even at extremely difficult targets (such as aiming by observing the reflection of a fish in the water).
Serparaj:
Introduction: He is the master of physical strength and mace warfare.
Shakti and Astra: His main weapon is the ‘Bhumanda Mace’. This mace is so heavy and powerful that one blow from it shakes the earth. Serparaj can crush even the biggest demons and rocks with his mace.
Nagpreti:
Introduction: He is the most isolated and fearsome member of Panchnag, with the appearance of a living skeleton.
Shakti: Nagpreti has amazing powers. He can change his body into any shape and can enter an enemy’s body and destroy it from within. His ‘steely screws’ are so deadly that it is almost impossible to escape from them. He allows the blows of weapons to pass through his body so that he does not get hurt.
Sinhnag:
Introduction: As the name suggests, his face is more like that of a lion.
Shakti: Singhnag has a lion-like roar and immense physical strength. The claws of his hands are extremely sharp and deadly, capable of tearing apart even an iron shield. He pounces on enemies like a violent beast on the battlefield.
Nagdev:
Introduction: He is the most senior and experienced warrior of Panchnag, who lives in the guise of an old sage.
Power and Weapons: He has a powerful staff named ‘Garuda Dand’. Nagdev’s biggest specialty is his long white beard, which he uses to capture or restrain enemies by extending it with magical power. He is deeply knowledgeable about Tantra Vidya and the art of warfare.
Role as Protector of Nagadweep
The main work of Panchnag is to protect Nagdweep and follow the orders of Mahatma Kaldoot.
War with Sahastra Bhujang: The first major test of Panchnag’s bravery came when ‘Sahastra Bhujang’ (the demon with a thousand hands) attacked Nagdweep and wanted to kidnap Princess Urvishi. The Kaaldoots could not fight because of their vow, but Panchnag, with their combined power, defeated the demon by cutting off his thousands of hands.
Relationship with Nagraj: Initially, there were some misunderstandings between Panchnag and Nagraj (as seen in ‘Visarpi Ki Shaadi’ and ‘Pralaya’), but later they became Nagraj’s closest friends and most trusted companions. They fully supported Nagraj against evil tantric powers like ‘Nagina’ and ‘Vishala’.
Personality and Temperament
Panchnag is not only a team of warriors but also a symbol of dignity and discipline. They respect their father, Mahatma Kaldoot, a lot, even though there have been differences between them in the past. The people of Nagadweep worship them like gods. They are serious by nature and so dedicated to their duty that they never shy away from risking their lives to protect Nagdweep.
Conclusion
The story of Panchnag tells how the union of spiritual power (Sadhana) and the elements of nature (Panchatattva) leads to the birth of warriors who bring an end to evil. While Nagraj fights with his willpower, Panchnag provides him with military support and is adept in every field of physical strength, tantric knowledge, and weapons. They are the best example of ‘Nag-Warriors’ in the history of Raj Comics.
