Raj Comics spawned serious heroes like Nagraj, Super Commando Dhruv, and Doga, as well as a character who won everyone’s hearts with his innocence and humor. That hero was ‘Gamraj’. Despite being the son of Yamraj, Gamraj never boasts about his powers but is seen solving small problems with friends in his own different world. “Baan Baan Bufalo”, published in the year 1997, is one such episode of this comic series, which not only made the readers laugh but also took a deep dig at the inconsistencies of society. This review is an attempt to understand every aspect of this comic that has kept it a ‘cult classic’ even today.

Amazing Fabric of Humor and Fantasy

The biggest quality of Gamraj’s stories was that, despite being set in a world of fantasy, they seemed very grounded and simple. This comic starts with an environment where the everyday problems of a common man are shown. Writer Tarun Kumar Wahi has woven the story in such a way that the reader gets connected to it from the very first page itself.

Gamraj, the main character of the story, gets stuck with his companion Shankalu in a situation where buffaloes from all over the city suddenly stop giving milk. This problem may sound like a joke, but in a society where milk is the mainstay of children’s nutrition, it becomes a serious crisis. This story, revolving around this crisis, takes us on a journey of imagination, where a mysterious masked villain, “Baan Baan Bufalo”, brings the entire city to its knees due to his whims.

Champak Bhumiya: Black Tongue and the Dreadful Truth of the Insurance World

A very interesting character in the story is ‘Champak Bhumiya’. Champak is an insurance agent, but he is not an ordinary agent. He claims that he has a black tongue and that anything bad he speaks becomes true. He intimidates Ramapul, a dairy owner, by luring him with his words and gets his buffaloes insured. This character of Champak represents those people who take advantage of the fear of others and get their work done.

Through this character, the author has taken a dig at the marketing strategies of insurance companies, where fear is used as a weapon. Champak’s saying, “Suppose the roof of your stable falls,” and something similar happening the next moment creates a strange suspense in the story. The reader keeps wondering till the end whether Champak is the real mastermind behind this entire conspiracy or whether he himself is just a part of the situation.

A Dig at the Outcry in the City and the Insensitivity of the Administration

When a villain named Baan Baan Bufalo “numbs” all the buffaloes of the city by giving them a special injection, the shortage of milk that arises in the city has been shown very effectively in the comic. Children are crying with hunger and housewives are upset, but the attitude of the administration appears completely different. Here, the author has made a sharp satire on politics and the police system.

Netaji is not worried about the problems of the public; rather, he is worried about what effect the shortage of milk will have on his vote bank. On the other hand, police officers are sad that they will no longer get free tea and samosas while on duty. The communication between Inspector Honest and Havildar Chaluram shows the working style of the department very closely. This scene seems as relevant today as it was two decades ago.

Baan Baan Bufalo: The ‘Tragic-Comic’ Tale of a Vengeful Villain

The villain of any story makes it memorable, and the villain of “Baan Baan Bufalo” stands out due to his simplicity and strange purpose. He is not a criminal who rules the world but is avenging one of his personal defeats on the entire buffalo species. When his reality comes to light at the end of the story, it is revealed that he was once a good-natured compounder.

A minor accident, in which a buffalo hits him and breaks his teeth, changes his entire life. Here, the author has also taken a dig at the role of the media. The newspapers made fun of the compounder’s helplessness and brought his ‘toothy’ smile into the headlines. The same fire of insult turns him into a criminal who has considered buffaloes as his biggest enemy. This backstory shows us the extent to which society’s banter can mentally break a person.

Shankalu’s Family and Small Bits of Humor

An essential part of Gamraj’s stories is Shankalu and his family. The scenes at Shankalu’s house in this comic are full of humor. The depiction of Shankalu’s wife Yam and her children is very funny. Giving children names based on vegetables—like eggplant, tinda, pumpkin, and spinach—shows the creativity of the author. These small incidents provide relief to the readers amidst the serious moments of the story.

Especially when Yam tries to milk her sick buffalo ‘Basanti’ and Basanti runs away on the pretext of illness, that scene seems alive like a cartoon film. Shankalu’s doubts and his innocence make him an ideal companion for Gamraj.

Yamunda and Basanti: A Unique Romance Between Yamalok and Bhulok

Yamunda, who is Gamraj’s divine vehicle, is revealed in this comic as not just an animal but a complete character. His love for his partner ‘Basanti’ and his concern about her illness add a gentle side to the story. Yamunda’s understanding of human emotions and sometimes showing more understanding than Gamraj makes him a favorite of the readers.

At the end of the story, when Yamunda and Basanti are shown touring the ‘Gateway of India’, the scene gives a complete ‘film-like’ feeling. This love story gives the message that emotions are not limited to humans only, but they are equally deep in silent animals.

Magical Painting of Character Features and Effect of Colors

The artwork of ‘Aakriti Features’ has a big contribution to the success of this comic. Raj Comics of the 90s were known for their elaborate and vibrant artwork. The characters’ textures in “Baan Baan Bufalo”, especially the villain’s buffalo mask and buffalo facial expressions, are very closely drawn.

The choice of colors is made according to the atmosphere of the story—where on one hand divinity and grandeur are visible in the scenes of Yamalok, while on the other hand reality is reflected in the scenes of the city. The way ‘disc’ and ‘numbing’ effects are shown in fight scenes became very popular among children. The artwork is so strong that even if one does not read the dialogue, one can still understand the story just by looking at the pictures.

The Spontaneity and Linguistic Sweetness of Dialogues

Tarun Kumar Wahi’s dialogues are the life of this comic. He has used very simple and colloquial language, which reaches close to the hearts of the readers. “Ban… Ba…” and “Eyes… Ahhh…” words like these not only create sound effects, but they also become the hallmark of characters.

The timing of the humorous dialogues is also excellent. For example, when Havildar Chaluram tries to take a bribe and the Inspector himself thinks about the benefits while teaching him morality lessons, the altercation between them becomes very funny. These dialogues give Gamraj’s comics a different identity from other superhero stories.

Conclusion: A Timeless Creation That Will Always Leave a Smile

At the end of the review, it would not be wrong to say that “Baan Baan Bufalo” is a work in the history of Raj Comics which has transcended the boundaries of time. This comic takes us to that era, where happiness was found in small things. This story teaches that revenge is never the solution to a problem and that serious social messages can be given even in the midst of laughter.

This pair of Gamraj and Shankalu is still a great source of nostalgia for the older generation and great entertainment for the new generation. If you’re looking for comics that take you away from stress and into childhood memories, “Baan Baan Bufalo” is a great choice. This comic symbolizes the golden age of the Indian comics world, when stories were not just printed on pages, but they settled in the hearts.
