जल्लाद और ककरोचा:

He is a villain that readers automatically hate, and this is the author’s biggest victory. His victory procession along with the dead body of the king clearly shows his evil thoughts.

Rajkumar Palak (Protector of the Future): Palak is the most emotional character in this story. The death of his father at such a young age and his exile from his country give depth to his character. The anger and revenge seen in his eyes indicate that he will become a great warrior in the future.

‘Dictator’ is not limited to just entertainment. It also shows the misuse of power and the consequences of dictatorship. At the same time, it touches upon the pain of becoming a refugee, when the Empress and the Prince have to take refuge in an unknown world—that is, the Earth—far from their roots.

The Gojo series was quite different from the rest of the Raj Comics series. A unique combination of science fiction and fantasy can be seen in it. ‘Dictator’ strengthens the foundation of this entire series and introduces readers to a universe where powers are infinite and conflict never ends.

Some shortcomings

Although it is a great comic, some readers may feel that the story ends a little early or that Shakal’s entry is very sudden. A little more detail could have been given about the origin of King Garu’s magical sword. Nevertheless, these small things do not diminish its overall impact.

Tarun Kumar Wahi’s funny writing and Bedi ji’s excellent pictures make this story even more interesting. The world of demons, strange plants, and the slippery cunningness of Bankelal—all combine to create an atmosphere that makes laughter come out automatically while reading.

This character from Raj Comics is different because he is not an ideal ‘hero’, but a mischievous, clever, and at times self-serving person. He has received such a boon (or rather a curse) from Lord Shiva that whenever he thinks of doing bad to someone, he knowingly or unknowingly gets something good from it.

Plot and Screenplay

“Mourning Garden(Shok vatika)” itself begins with loud sarcasm and light-hearted humor. The story is based on the conflict between humans and demons, which the author has shown in a very funny manner.

In the beginning, it is shown that Raja Vikram Singh sends a proposal of peace to Dantketu, the king of demons. Here, the author’s humor is visible in its full color. The monsters accept this offer because they fear having “orange peel juice” squeezed into their eyes by humans. It is an innocent fear, which forces even dangerous demons and immediately brings a smile to the faces of the readers.

The real mess in the story begins when Rakshasraj Dantketu reaches Vishalgarh. Here, the atmosphere becomes completely a “comedy of errors.” The condition was that demons would come in the guise of humans, and humans would come in the guise of demons. Dantketu cleverly disguises himself as a woman so that he can understand the tricks of humans. But Raja Vikram Singh feels that Dantketu has sent his wife. In this misunderstanding, the commander cuts off the nose of that ‘queen’—Bani Dantketu. This incident becomes the foundation of the entire story.

Dantketu gets badly humiliated by having his nose cut. He immediately comes in his true form and kidnaps the Maharani of Vishalgarh, that is, Vikram Singh’s wife, in a plume of smoke. It is from here that Bankelal enters the story. Raja Vikram Singh clearly threatens Bankelal that if he does not bring back the queen within three days, he will be hanged with the same cut nose. The timid and comfort-loving Bankelal sets out on this mission under compulsion. This is the real fun of Bankelal’s stories—he is forcibly made a hero.

The trip of Bankelal starts from the ‘Golam River’, which has a very fast flow. On the way, he has to face many strange difficulties and strange creatures. Falling into the river, losing the sword, and then getting among the unarmed monsters creates good suspense in the story.

Reaching the demon world, Bankelal learns that the queen has been kept in the ‘Mourning Garden’. There he finds a variety of strange monsters, such as ‘Kickintu’, which is half horse and half monster, and many other elusive creatures. Bankelal dodges all this, less with his intelligence and more with the help of luck. At one place, he pretends to fight an invisible enemy, seeing which the rest of the demons themselves get scared.

The ending of the story is equally dramatic. Bankelal not only saves the queen, but also traps Dantketu in his own tricks. The fear of orange juice shown at the beginning plays an important role in the end, or rather, the same fear is taken advantage of. Eventually, Bankelal brings the Rani back safely to Vishalgarh.

Character Analysis

Bankelal: In this comic, Bankelal is seen in his absolutely familiar form. He is not a brave warrior, but a person struck by circumstances. When he is forcibly sent into the boat, he cries, is afraid, and even pleads. His true strength is not his sword or bravery, but his luck and his cunning. Like at one place, two demons fight among themselves to kill him. Bankelal does nothing special there; he just tries to save his life by hiding silently, but in the end, he wins. This timid and common man–like nature of his brings him even closer to the readers, because he seems very “relatable”.

Raja Vikram Singh: As always, the king of Vishalgarh is shown here too as an innocent and emotional ruler. His love for his wife is shown so much that he is ready to even hang himself with one “nose-cut punishment”. This is actually a satirical portrayal of his character. He trusts Bankelal blindly, while he knows very well that Bankelal often works out of compulsion, not out of wisdom.

Rakshasaraja Dantketu: Dantketu is a powerful but mentally weak villain. His wearing a female disguise and then getting his own nose cut clearly shows his foolishness. He has immense power, he is also knowledgeable about black magic, yet he appears helpless in front of simple tricks like Bankelal’s. The special thing about the villains of Raj Comics has been that they look scary as well as ridiculous.

Senapati: The role of Senapati here is mainly of comic relief and as the character who takes the story forward. His advice to “cut off the queen’s nose” becomes the biggest trouble of the whole story. It also shows how wise the king’s advisors are—this is said in complete satire.

Humor and Satire

“Mourning Garden”’s greatest strength is its humor. Author Tarun Kumar Wahi has used both words and circumstances in such a way that laughter remains constant. There is a clear glimpse of humor in the dialogues, like the demons saying that they will squeeze orange juice into the eyes of humans—it sounds innocent, but becomes an effective threat. The king’s statement that demons will not even burp after eating Bankelal because it will not fill their stomach is a great example of dark humor.

Bedi ji’s artwork makes the humor even more fun. Dantketu’s appearance in female attire with a heavy body and trying to show delicacy, or the fear-filled expressions of Bankelal in difficult situations, all these scenes automatically bring out laughter. There is also a lot of situational humor, like the king crying over his wife’s kidnapping, but choosing a small animal like a “mouse” for suicide, or demons fearing a thin human being as a superpowered warrior, while Bankelal is just looking for a way to escape. These things make the whole story very ridiculous and funny.

Bedi ji’s artwork has been a hallmark of Raj Comics, especially the Bankelal series, and her work in “Mourning Garden” is equally brilliant. Bankelal’s long nose, special teeth, and mustache distinguish him in the design of the characters. The depiction of monsters is scary as well as a bit cartoonish, perfectly matching the light-hearted mood of the story. Especially the design of Dantketu, with his big horns and huge body, looks quite impressive.

The background work is also great. Views of the strange trees and plants of the monster world and the “Mourning Garden” are made in detail. The Golam River scenes show the strong flow and movement of water well through lines. Along with this, it is also a great vehicle of comic nostalgia, especially for the readers of the 90s, because it fully captures the simplicity, innocence, and charm of the comics of that period.

Weak links:
Being a fantasy comic, not much logic is expected in it anyway, but in some places events happen more easily than necessary. This weakens the logic a bit. For example, Bankelal’s safe escape from so many monsters without any weapons is completely left to his “luck”. Similarly, Raja Vikram Singh is shown here as an excessive fool, as ever, being a part of the series. This may be a hallmark of Bankelal comics, but it may seem a bit repetitive when seen again and again.

There are many scenes in the story that are remembered for a long time. The nose-cutting scene is the biggest turning point of the entire comic, where both Senapati’s stupidity and Dantketu’s anger are brilliantly shown. It is very fun to see Dantketu growling in the guise of a queen and the king getting scared after seeing her.

Another interesting scene comes when Bankelal gets trapped in the forest under the illusion of an invisible enemy. He acts knowingly or unknowingly in such a way that the demons themselves become frightened and confused. The story also ends in a light-hearted manner. When Bankelal returns successful, the king gives him a “puchchi” by hugging him, and Bankelal’s irritation with it automatically creates laughter.

‘Manoj Comics’ had made its mark in action and detective stories in the Indian comics industry. While other companies were emphasizing heroes with superpowers, Manoj Comics brought forward characters who taught criminals a lesson without any superpowers, on the basis of their intelligence and strength. ‘Kan’ (Kaan) is also a highly liked hero of the same line.

“Kaan Law” is not just a simple action story. In this, the social problems of that time, the greed of companies and the cruelty of the crime world are clearly visible. Its cover page itself is so powerful that any comic lover stops looking at it—Kan looks like a scoundrel tossing a scoundrel in the air, which clearly shows his style and his ‘Kaan Law’.

Plot (The Spot)

The story begins with the scary atmosphere of ‘dengue’ spread in the city of Suryanagar. Hospitals are overloaded, people are upset, and tension is spread everywhere. Meanwhile a company—‘Lloyd Pharmaceuticals’—comes out like a messiah. Its medicine is doing wonders in the treatment of dengue and the company is earning a lot of money. But writer Hanif Azhar has indicated in the beginning itself that there is definitely something wrong behind the progress of this company.

On the other hand, another problem is increasing in the city—kidnapping of college girls in broad daylight. Meanwhile enter the story ‘Aakash’ and ‘Chhavi’. Both love each other. Chhavi is the daughter of a brave journalist, who is continuously raising her voice against the increasing crime in the city.

The story takes a real turn when the kidnappers surround Aakash and Chhavi. Here it seems that perhaps Aakash is just a common college boy and will immediately give up. But the story turns around. On the other hand, ‘Kan’ is looking at the notes of his old diary and he understands that dengue is spreading in the city and girls are continuously disappearing, that these two things are not different. A big and dangerous plan is going on behind them.

The thrill is heightened when Aakash and Chhavi are imprisoned in a warehouse. Here Aakash uses his brain to render the kidnappers unconscious with a ‘blow-pipe’ (fukni). Kan, on the other hand, finally reaches the villain’s hideout by adding one clue after another.

It is finally revealed that Lloyd Pharmaceuticals is the real culprit. These same people deliberately spread dengue so that their medicines could be sold more. And this same gang was also kidnapping girls. At last, Kan and Aakash together destroy this entire gang.

Character analysis

Kaan:

In this comic, Kan is not only a fighting hero, but also a sharp-minded spy. The flashback shown on page 16 further strengthens his character. In childhood, he receives the “Master of the Year” award from the Prime Minister. This shows that the talent of Kan is not just there—behind it is his hard work, his training and the teachings of his father ‘Balwant Thakkar’.

Kaan has a calm but extremely dangerous nature. He shows no mercy at all for criminals. And this title also means “Kaan Law”—where the government law delays, the Kaan Law immediately gives its verdict.

Aakash:

The biggest surprise of this story is Aakash. At the beginning he seems to be a simple, lost boy in his love, but as the story progresses, his ‘action form’ comes to the fore. He looks no less than a superhero. The way he shoots poisonous or sedating arrows from the pipe makes him quite different from the rest of the characters. He is not just a companion of Kan, but appears to be standing like another hero throughout the story—i.e. a Parallel Hero.

Chhavi:

Chhavi’s character is exactly like heroines from 90’s comics—beautiful, a little nervous, but standing with her love when the time comes. However, in the story, she is mostly in the role of a ‘damsel in distress’, i.e. a girl in trouble, the responsibility of saving whom lies on both Aakash and Kan.

Villains (Lloyd Pharma and the Hooligans):

The real villain of this story is not just a single man, but a big corporate company, which makes the story feel even more real and like today. ‘Iron’ named punk, who has direct collision with Kan, is a symbol of complete physical strength. The villains here are not just criminals with scary faces, but white-collar people who are poisoning the society from within.

Writing and dialogue

Hanif Azhar’s writing is fast, tight and moves forward without wasting any time. The story does not come loose anywhere. Something new keeps happening on every page. Even in dialogues there is fun like in the films of that era.
“Crime and law keep chasing each other…” — lines like these give a special and slightly heavier feel to the beginning of the story.
The author has strongly taunted the health services becoming a business. “…due to which people were getting health benefits and the company was getting profits worth lakhs of rupees,” this thing fits perfectly even today.

“Kaan Law” is the perfect title. It clearly shows that Kaan does not trust the slow process of the courts—he pronounces the verdict on the spot.

Drawing and art

Naresh Kumar’s drawing perfectly sums up the style identified by Manoj Comics.
Action Sequence: The fight scenes in the comic are very fast and powerful. The use of speed (motion) is superb especially in the entry of Kan on pages 13 and 14 and in his fight. Bouncing in the air, kicking and falling enemies—everything seems quite lively.
Anatomy (Anatomy): Heroes’ muscular bodies and villains’ facial expressions are well worked out. The yellow jacket and visor of Kan make his entire look more stylish.

Color combination: The comic’s use of colors is quite bright and attention-grabbing for 90’s technology. Solid colors have been used in many backgrounds, due to which there is more focus on action.
Paneling: Panels move from one to another in a very smooth manner to show the story. Flashbacks are not made in a different style, but because of the narration box everything is easily understood.

Thematic analysis

Corporate greed versus public interest:

This comic raises a very serious point, turning even illness into business. Dengue spread by Lloyd Pharmaceuticals points to how ethics are put on hold to make profits.

Youth power:

Through Aakash, the author shows that superheroes (Kan) are not always necessary to fight evil. If a common youth dares, he too can fight the mistakes of the system and make a difference.

Self-defence:

The part related to Kan’s childhood suggests that martial arts should be learned not just for fighting, but also to protect oneself and help others. This is an essential skill, especially in today’s times.

Critical Approach

Positive side:

Fast pace: The story moves so fast that the reader does not get a chance to think, and this is the real strength of a thriller.
Suspense: Bringing out Aakash’s true identity and his abilities slowly maintains the thrill in the story.
Action: This comic is completely full of action. Martial arts, gun fights, bangs—it is no less than a feast for those who like action.

Downside:

Lack of logic: In some places the story seems like the film world. Like, Aakash aiming so precisely with just one pipe that he can defeat even enemies armed with machine guns—it seems a little incredible.
Violence: The amount of violence in the comic is a little high. The fighting and bloodshed are shown in a very graphic manner, which some readers find excessive.
Role of Police: As always, the police (Inspector Alpin) finally arrives when the hero has already finished everything. This formula has been repeated in many stories.

“Kaan Law” is a fantastic example of 90’s Indian comics. This was the time when stories gave more importance to fun, entertainment and hero bravery than logic. Hanif Azhar’s story and Naresh Kumar’s art together create an experience that keeps the reader engaged till the end.

If you have been reading Manoj Comics before, then this story will take you to the world of old memories. And if you are a new reader, it introduces you to the “Angry Young Man” style superhero of that era—who did justice even while being outside the system and did not delay in creating fear.

Overall, it is a “must read” comic, especially for those who want to enjoy old Indian action comics. It has everything that a spicy blockbuster should have—hero, villain, plot, fight and win.

Usually, the villain in superhero comics aims to destroy the world, but the beauty of this comics is that its ‘antagonist’ does not want to destroy the world, but wants to ‘save’ and ‘unite’ it, though in his old and untimely ways. Author Sanjay Gupta has woven a fine web of psychological and physical conflict here.

Disruption to the joy of victory

The story begins with a historic moment for Vikas Nagar. Mahabali Bhokal, who has returned after fighting one of the toughest wars of his life, Maharavan, is returning with his wives (Rupsi and Saloni) and children in the chariot of Devraj Indra. There is a Diwali-like atmosphere in Vikas Nagar. The people are standing with their eyes closed to welcome their protector. Only cheers of “Bhokal” are echoing in the atmosphere.

But, “time never remains the same.” At the very moment when the joy was at its peak, there is a terrible vibration in the earth. This was not an ordinary earthquake. A great man wakes up from a huge cave located in the forest. This great man—Dharanidhar.

Introduction to Dharanidhar:
Dharanidhar is not a demon. He is a warrior of ancient times who was sleeping for thousands of years. His physical strength can be gauged from the fact that he removes the huge rock placed at the mouth of his cave like a straw. He speaks in pure Sanskrit language, which is proof of his antiquity.

Cause of collision:
Bhokal’s chariot gets stuck in a pit due to the earthquake. The soldiers and Bhokal himself try to take it out, but then Dharanidhar reaches there and picks up the heavy chariot (on which Indra’s throne is placed) with one hand. Here is an interesting scene where Dharanidhar reads the mind of the other person with his ‘mental power’ and learns their language (Hindi).

Dharanidhar declares himself a “world savior”. He feels that he is still in his own era. He considers Indra’s throne suitable for him and starts taking it away. It is from here that the conflict between Bhokal and Dharanidhar begins. Bhokal stops him, but Dharanidhar, who considers himself the sole master of this entire earth, attacks Bhokal, thinking him to be an insignificant child.

Bhokal’s defeat:
The most shocking part of this comics is where Bhokal, who has just killed a demon like Maharavan, appears helpless in front of Dharanidhar.
Bhokal’s ‘shield’, which used to stop big weapons, could not bear the force of Dharanidhar’s punch.
Bhokal’s ‘cataclysmic sword’, which cuts iron like butter, cannot even scratch Dharanidhar’s skin.
Bhokal’s physical strength proves to be negligible in front of Dharanidhar.
Eventually, Dharanidhar knocks Bhokal unconscious with a mental blow and leaves with the throne.

Character analysis

Mahabali Bhokal:
Bhokal is shown in a different situation in this comics. He is full of confidence as he has just returned from a big win. But his quick defeat at the hands of Dharanidhar shatters his ego (or self-confidence). It shows that there is always someone in this universe who can be more powerful than you. Bhokal struggles here as a warrior and not as an invincible god.

Dharanidhar:
This is the most complex and interesting character in this story. He is not cruel, but self-respecting and arrogant. He does not consider himself ‘evil’. His purpose is to ‘protect the world’. Dharanidhar is struck by ‘Samay’ (Time). He awakens in an age (Kalyuga) where the earth is divided into boundaries and countries. His dream is of “unbroken earth”, which sounds good, but in the present reality it makes him look like a dictator.
In the flashback it is revealed that he has the blessings of Lord Parashurama. Parashurama gave him his ‘firearm axe’ and his ‘anger’ so that he could protect the earth. This backstory makes Dharanidhar an ‘anti-hero’ or ‘deviant hero’ instead of a villain.

Main points and themes of the plot

Era change and the flow of time:
In the middle part of the comics, the author presents a philosophical approach. It has been described how civilizations change over time—Satyayuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparayuga and now Kaliyuga. Yug-men like Ram, Krishna, and the Pandavas came and went. Dharanidhar was unaware of this change. When he wakes up and sees that the earth has been torn into thousands of pieces (countries), he is deeply traumatized. This part makes the comics a little thoughtful by elevating them above simple action.

War of Misunderstandings:
The battle between Bhokal and Dharanidhar is not a battle of ‘good versus evil’, but a misunderstanding between two right people. Dharanidhar feels that Bhokal is an ordinary king coming in his way, while Bhokal feels that Dharanidhar is a robber or demon stealing the throne.

Power versus pride:
Dharanidhar has immense power, but he lacks ‘conscience’. He feels that he alone can control the entire world. Parashurama’s anger is making him blind. Bhokal, even after his defeat, does not accept defeat and is ready to protect his subjects.

Drawing and Art

The work of Kadam Studio was the hallmark of Raj Comics of that period. The war between Bhokal and Dharanidhar is very dynamic. When Dharanidhar defeats Bhokal, the impact readers feel. The blowing and falling of Bhokal in the air is very well depicted.
The use of colors in the pages of communication between Parashuram and Dharanidhar is excellent. The kind of costumes and backgrounds used to show the mythological period are commendable. The artists have beautifully depicted both the ego on Dharanidhar’s face and the anger and sorrow that arise after seeing the situation of Kaliyuga.

Dialogue and Writing

Sanjay Gupta’s writing is well done. Dharanidhar speaking Sanskrit in the beginning and then using complex Hindi makes his character heavy and ancient.
Like—”We’ve woken up from Mahanidra… We’re world saviors Dharanidhar.”
“The more time I give to it, the more destruction it will cause here.” — This shows Bhokal’s devotion to duty.

The transformation of time and eras is very impressive. It takes readers deeper into the story.

Drawbacks

Although it is a great comic, there are some drawbacks:
Bhokal’s fans may be upset that the hero who defeated the gods and demons lost so easily to a human with physical strength. The neutralization of his sword and shield seems a bit unbelievable. Dharanidhar slept for thousands of years, but his cave was so close to Vikas Nagar and no one came to know? It sounds a little strange.

This comics is the first part of a series. The story continues in “Vishwa Rakshak” (World Defender). The rocks falling at the end are a cliffhanger, which makes the reader buy the next comics, but as an independent story it seems incomplete.

Conclusions and final decisions

“Dharanidhar” is a dazzling star from the golden age of Raj Comics. This is not a test of Bhokal’s power, but of his patience and struggle. These comics teach us that muscle power is not everything; time and circumstances are the strongest.
Dharanidhar is a villain you can’t hate. His purpose is great (the unification of the earth), but the method is wrong. His association with Parashurama connects the story to Indian mythology, which has always been the strength of Raj Comics.

Beginning of a great story

The comic “Kalkoot” we are talking about today is one of those classic stories of Bhokal which is a brilliant mix of mythology, fantasy and tremendous action. The comic, which came out in 1997, not only shows Bhokal’s heroism but also reveals that when evil reaches its peak, the divine powers also accompany truth and justice. Writer Sanjay Gupta and artist Dilip Kadam have done amazing work in this comic.

Mountain of Destruction

The story begins with a very grand and thought-provoking scene. The creator of the universe, the gods themselves, are discussing who is the “best” among the millions of people on earth. The eyes of the gods finally stop at Bhokal. According to them, courage, mind and right behavior in Bhokal are a perfect combination of all three. That’s why they consider him the possessor of divine weapons.

But as soon as the gods bless Bhokal, a new trouble awakens on earth. A quiet, huge mountain suddenly comes alive. This form made of stones and rocks is not a simple thing, but a terrible great-monster named “Kalkoot”. Kalkoot’s awakening is not an ordinary incident, but the result of his anger. Someone has broken his penance of thousands of years, and now he is burning in the fire of revenge.

The first major turning point of the story comes when Kalkoot starts showing his strengths. He is not just a giant stone demon; he has the power to change nature as per his wish. He can create storms, shake the earth and create scary creatures.

On the other hand, Bhokal, who is protecting the Bhil clan in the nearby forest, sees the devastation caused by Kalkoot. Bhokal’s first encounter with Kalkoot makes him understand that this battle cannot be won by sword and shield alone. The size and power of Kalkoot are many times more than those of Bhokal. Apart from this, Kalkoot also has dangerous help like ‘Kalbhujang’ (flying snake-monster) and ‘Kal Kankar’ (stone soldier), which makes him almost invincible.

Another turning point of the story comes when a mysterious old monk — Pavanacharya — comes to help Bhokal. This sage tells Bhokal that Kalkoot has received a boon from the severe penance of Mother Kali, due to which his body has become unbreakable like a thunderbolt.

The thrill of the war increases when Kalkoot turns the forest river poisonous. Due to this, more innocent tribespeople and animals start dying. Here the author has made very beautiful and emotional use of Indian mythology. When things start to get out of Bhokal’s control, Mahabali Hanuman is invoked. The arrival of Hanuman ji and the mention of the Sanjeevani herb give a different spiritual height to the story.

Ultimately, after a tremendous and exhausting battle in which Bhokal has to make full use of both his understanding and strength, he puts an end to Kalkoot and his demonic powers.

Character analysis

Mahabali Bhokal:
In this comic, Bhokal is shown not just as a warrior, but as a true protector and devotee. When he realizes that his physical strength is falling short in front of Kalkoot, he does not show stubbornness or pride. He listens to Pavanacharya and remembers Hanuman ji in times of crisis. This shows his humility.
He also has the power to fly (which here seems to be associated with some magical shoe or feather) and a sword like ‘Prahara’, but his real power is his “never-say-die” stubbornness and courage.

Kalkoot (villain):
Kalkoot is one of the most unique villains of Raj Comics. He is not a flesh-and-bone man, but a living mountain. His character creates fear. His arrogance and anger make him even more destructive. Instead of just making him look bad, the author has also explained that penance gave him powers, but he misused them.
His attacks are also of different types, such as throwing mud from the mouth, raining stone balls, and changing the weather.

Supporting characters (Pavanacharya and Hanuman):
Pavanacharya is a symbol of knowledge and experience in the story. He shows the right path to Bhokal. Whereas the entry of Lord Hanuman is like a “trump card” in the story. Only when it seems that everything can end now, the arrival of Hanuman ji gives new hope. This moment further strengthens the religious connect of Indian readers.

Illustration and art (Artwork and Illustrations)

The scenes of the fight between Bhokal and Kalkoot are amazing. On pages 25–28, when Bhokal avoids Kalkoot’s blows in the air and immediately counterattacks, you really feel the movement. It seems like the panels are moving. Dilip Kadam has used spectacular angles to show the huge size of Kalkoot. When Kalkoot stands in front of Bhokal, Bhokal really looks like a small ant. Due to this, both the danger and strength of the villain are felt many times more.

The colors are very bright and nice for the 1997 printing. Kalkoot is shown in muddy and brown colors, while Bhokal is given more bright colors, which makes the difference between the two characters instantly understandable. The views of forests, mountains and sky are also very detailed. The confidence on Bhokal’s face, the fear on the faces of the Bhils, and the cruelty on Kalkoot’s face — all these are shown in a very lively manner with lines and shading.

Writing and Dialogue

Sanjay Gupta’s writing has always been tight and effective.

Dialogues:
The dialogues in this comic seem a bit dramatic and heavy, which was typical of comics of that period. Like Kalkoot’s dialogue — “Who broke my penance? Who woke me up from my trance?” — directly creates fear in the reader. Bhokal’s dialogues are full of bravery and confidence.

Narrative Flow:
The pace of the story is great. There is a fun dash of mystery and action from the beginning and it lasts till the end. Nowhere does the author let the story slow down or get boring. After a few pages, a new problem, such as a hemisphere-like creature or poisonous water, comes to the fore, which keeps the reader continuously connected.

Incorporation of mythology:
Adding elements like ‘Brahma’, ‘Kali’, ‘Sanjeevani Booti’ and ‘Hanuman’ to the story was a smart move. With this, the story not only remains fiction, but also becomes deeply connected to Indian culture and mythology.

Critical vision

Positive side:
Unique Villain: Making an entire mountain a villain was a very creative idea. It felt completely different from ordinary monsters.
Religious touch: Hanuman ji’s arrival gives a great twist to the story like ‘divine intervention’, which is very much liked by Indian readers.
Action: The whole comic is full of nonstop action. Sword fighting, air combat and magical forces have been used extensively.

Downside:
Lack of logic: In some places logic seems weak. Like Kalkoot was so powerful that he could have finished everything in a moment if he wanted, but instead of killing Bhokal, he keeps scaring him or giving long speeches. It sounds like classic villain syndrome.
Dependence of Bhokal: In the middle of the story, it seems that Bhokal is more dependent on external help (the sage and Hanuman ji) than on his own strength. Although in the end he proves his ability, in between he looks a little weak and helpless.

Conclusion

“Kalkoot” is a very important part of the history of Raj Comics. This was the period when comics were being written not just for children, but for people of all ages. Dilip Kadam’s excellent artwork and Sanjay Gupta’s tight story make it really a ‘must read’.
This comic also teaches that pride in power brings destruction (Kalkoot), while using power with humility (Bhokal) does good to people. It also assures that even a big crisis can be avoided with patience, courage and devotion.
