In the history of Indian comics, the name of Raj Comics has been written in golden letters. When we talk about great heroes like Nagraj and Doga, a different image of adventure and bravery emerges in our minds. In recent years, Raj Comics has tried to bring something new and special for its readers, the best example of which is the ‘Nag Granth’ series. The first part of this series, ‘Adiparva’, is not just a comic, but an important work explaining in depth the existence of Nagraj, his past, and the possibilities of his future. Edited by Sanjay Gupta and written by Nitin Mishra, this work is no less than a gift for Raj Comics fans. In this review, we will try to understand in detail every aspect of Adiparva that has made it one of the most influential comics of the present era.

Amazing Confluence of Spirituality and Crime in the Streets of Kashi

The center of the story is Kashi (Varanasi), the oldest and most spiritual city of India. The vibrancy with which writer Nitin Mishra has portrayed the atmosphere of Kashi here is praiseworthy. Dashashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, and the waves of the Ganga are not just the background, but they become important parts of the story. Nagraj’s arrival in Kashi is not for any ordinary mission; rather, he has come here in search of his existence and for the purpose of establishing the mysterious Shivalinga, which was instructed to him by Kaaldoot.

Here, the form of Nagraj is that of an ordinary fakir, who is searching for truth while hiding his identity in the crowd of the world. The contrast between Kashi’s spirituality and the modern crime flourishing there gives a strong foundation to the story.

The Human Sensibilities of the Great Hero and the Philosophical Aspect of Existence

Adiparva begins with the philosophy of life. The opening pages of the comic make the reader think about the purpose of life, suffering, and the human desire to conquer death. Nagraj, whom we often see as an invincible superhero, appears here in a very human and sensitive form. His loneliness, betrayal by his loved ones, and his separation from the snake community present him as a character with whom the reader can connect emotionally. The author has shown that a great hero not only fights enemies but also struggles with the darkness within himself and the questions related to his existence. The life cycle spinning like a time cycle and the symbol of the serpent (Ouroboros) feeding on its own tail fit very precisely here.

Doga’s Arrival in Kashi and the Fierce Form of the Hell Destroyer

Another big attraction of this comic is the presence of ‘Narak Nashak Doga’. While Nagraj’s journey is spiritual and mysterious, Doga’s story is full of urban crime and cruelty. Doga has come to Kashi in search of a serial killer who is brutally killing helpless beggars sleeping on the footpath. This form of Doga looks very impressive. His mutation, which he considers both his curse and boon, gives him the strength to smell and hear like a hound.

Connecting the vehicle dog of Kashi Kotwal ‘Kalbhairav’ with Doga is a very subtle and impressive creativity of the author. Doga and Nagraj being in the same city and fighting evil at different levels give the story a ‘multi-starrer’ epic feel.

Professor Nagmani and Nagdant: Shadows of the Past and Flame of Vengeance

The perfection of any great story is not possible without villains. In Adiparva, Nagraj’s oldest and cunning enemy, Professor Nagmani, once again comes forward with her plans. Nagmani’s son ‘Nagadant’, who seems to be a clone or replica of Nagraj, creates new tension in the story. Nagmani’s technical expertise and her jealousy have made her a dangerous person who is using her own son as a weapon. Nagadant’s powers and his behavior are filled with hatred toward Nagraj.

The way the conflict between these two has been shown on a technical and mental level keeps the readers engaged. It is not just a physical war, but also a battle of principles and legacy.

Sin Council and Papadhyaksha: A Global Organization of Evil

Another big dimension in the story is that of the Council of Sin, led by the mysterious ‘Papadhyaksha’. This organization is not just a group of local criminals, but it includes the world’s biggest supervillains. The character of Papadhyaksha is like a shadow who is watching everything and controlling events from behind the scenes. The different villains present in the council indicate that Nagraj and his companions will face a huge and organized threat in the coming parts. Papadhyaksha’s view that “there is no significant difference between the tendencies of a civilized human society and a supervillain” presents a bitter but thought-provoking approach toward society.

Emperor Thodanga and the Dreadful Past of the Forests of Africa

A large part of the comic is dedicated to the story of ‘Thodanga’. Thodanga’s introduction and the description of his past take the story to an international level. His journey from the jungles of Tanzania to gaining immense physical powers is full of adventure. Connecting Thodanga with the ‘Black Magic of Africa’ and ‘Voodoo’ powers makes him a very scary rival. His claim that he has already defeated Nagraj creates curiosity in the minds of readers. Thodanga’s character brings back, in a new form, the old legacy of Raj Comics, where villains were not only powerful but also had a deep cultural background behind them.

The Mysterious Web of Gems and Tantra Vidya

The role of ‘Nagina’, Nagraj’s companion and once his enemy, is very important in this part. Nagina is not just a serpent here, but she is helping Nagraj in his quest for tantra-sadhana and spiritual powers, or perhaps walking with him as part of some secret plan of her own. The selection of Manikarnika Ghat as a place for Tantra Sadhana and the importance of the cremation fire are well revealed through this narrative.

The complex relationship between Nagina and Nagraj—where a fine line of trust and doubt always remains—adds a new layer of mystery to the story. Their attempt to reach the ‘great ghost’ and experience the cold fire of hell takes the story into a completely fantasy-driven and supernatural world.

Pinnacle of Painting and Art: The Magic of Hemant Kumar

The contribution of artist Hemant Kumar is very important to the success of Adiparva. The modern art style of Raj Comics is visible here in its best form. Every frame gives a cinematic experience. Nagraj’s muscular structure, Doga’s scary mask, Kashi’s narrow streets, and the gorgeous view of the ghats—everything is very finely crafted. The combination of colors is also especially impressive.

The use of blue and purple tones in night scenes and the orange light of the pyres burning on the ghats create a deep atmosphere. The facial expressions of the characters, especially the contrast between Doga’s anger and Nagraj’s calmness, are clearly visible through the artwork. This artwork makes the comic not just something to read, but also a great visual experience.

A Subtle Touch of Social Issues and Human Rights

Adiparva is not limited to superhero battles only. It also shows some dark aspects of society. The exploitation of poor garbage-picking children of Varanasi and their use in arms smuggling brings out a bitter truth. Criminals like Dilawar Khan, who take advantage of the helplessness of orphaned children, are actually the same demons that Nagraj confronts.

Apart from this, the role of news channels and media has also been sarcastically criticized, showing how they can declare a hero a hypocrite and a criminal just to create sensation. All these elements connect the story to modern times and prevent it from becoming merely a fictional narrative.

The Mysterious Gate of Mahaprat and Naglok

In the last part of the story, we get a glimpse of Naglok. The mystery beneath the ‘Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple’ located in the depths of the Ganga and the opening of the path to Naglok from there is a wonderful combination of Indian mythology and modern fantasy. Nagraj’s conflict with the water snakes and then reaching the gates of a very ancient civilization leaves great suspense for the coming part, ‘Nagparva’.

Here, Nagraj faces the truth of his own lineage, which was probably erased from history. The presence of Takshika and other serpents makes it clear that this war is not going to be limited to Earth alone.

Writing Style and Intensity of Dialogues

Nitin Mishra’s writing is very effective. He has not only maintained the flow of the story but also given depth to the characters’ dialogues. Whether it is the philosophical thoughts of Nagraj or the sharp words of Doga, every dialogue feels appropriate to the nature of the character. The dialogues show a balanced mix of heroism, emotions, and revenge.

Especially the conversation between Doga and his ‘Suraj Uncle’ (who has now become his enemy dog trainer) is very emotional and impressive. The breakdown of the guru-shishya relationship and the confrontation of an orphaned child with his guardian show the complex struggle of human emotions.

Conclusion: A Timeless Legacy of Raj Comics

‘Adiparva’ is an important step in the new direction of Raj Comics. It reminds us how deep the roots of Indian superheroes are and how rich their stories can be. This comic isn’t just action-packed, but equally strong philosophically, emotionally, and socially. The approach with which Sanjay Gupta has started this series is commendable. This part leaves many questions in the minds of readers and creates a strong foundation for the next part, ‘Nagparva’.

If you are an old fan of Raj Comics, it will take you back to old memories. And if you are a new reader, it will introduce you to the immense potential of Indian comics that can also be appreciated internationally. ‘Adiparva’ is not just the story of a great hero, but the beginning of a great battle between the history of serpents and the future of humans that future generations will remember. This comic is a living example of the rise of the Indian comics industry, and it is a must-have in the collection of every comics lover.
